The 1960s

Heard an ad over Pandora for State Farm Insurance narrated by JK Simmons. Couldn’t hear anything other than Cave Johnson.

Pork’s slogan of “The Other White Meat” is now “Be Inspired”. I’m not a vegetarian or a vegan, but I hate when advertisers try putting a happy face on something that in reality is a miserable, messy, and barbarous business. To promote “a more emotional connection to [your] product”1 when your product is the skeletal muscle and associated fat tissue of a living being is pretty goddamn ridiculous.

You’re enslaving, humiliating, butchering, and devouring another life form. It’s gluttonous, horrific, even tasty… but not inspiring.

Come back with that pitch when you’re not causing massive amounts of greenhouse gases through methane emissions, polluting the environment with factory farm waste, and every other Captain Planet villain byproduct that Big Food dreams up. Then we’ll get inspired.

I love pork chops. I love pork loin. I loooove bacon. But you’re still shooting a pig with an air gun, carving up its corpse, and wrapping it in plastic. Give me a break.
